TiVo to provide ratings and interactive ad services to NBA

tivo_logo_man-744939TiVo announced yesterday that they signed a contract with The National Basketball Association for ratings and interactive ad services.

TiVo will provide the league with comprehensive audience measurement reports evaluating the entire 2008-09 NBA season as viewed by TiVo subscribers.

TiVo’s  Stop||WatchTM ratings service will provide the data for the report, which will include a second-by-second analysis of viewing habits and commercial ratings for every prime-time NBA game.

In addition, the NBA will promote this year’s finals using TiVo’s interactive advertising solutions. The NBA is the first professional sports league to embrace TiVo’s interactive advertising solutions, the DVR company said.

“We are impressed with the power and impact of TiVo’s interactive advertising solutions and audience research,” said NBA executive vp of marketing partnerships, Mark Tatum. “This is a great tool for us to further promote The Finals and show advertisers the advantages of live NBA programming to deliver commercial audiences in the world of DVR-based viewing.”

Tara Maitra, general manager and vp of content services and advertising sales at TiVo Inc., said the NBA agreement shows that “even those who theoretically should be the least concerned about this new DVR environment are finding the kinds of ad and research solutions we provide [helpful],” allowing them to understand the constantly evolving media landscape, and one in which DVRs will likely play a growing role.

Get your music and photos on TiVo

tivo_logo_man-744939Newswires and tech blogs were abuzz earlier this month when TiVo and Amazon announced that you can now download movies and TV shows to TiVo via Amazon’s Video On Demand service.

Did you know you can also get all your photos and music through TiVo? With TiVo, you can get music from services such as Rhapsody, Music Choice, and Live365. You can also listen to podcasts as well as your personal music library. Certainly a good way to put those surround sound speakers to good use!

With TiVo you can also view your photos on your TV. Not only can you view the photos you have stored on your computer, but you can view photos from Photobucket and Picasa as well. So, if you have a TiVo or are thinking about getting one, take advantage of all of its capabilities beyond TV shows and movies!

Never Leave the Couch Again!

TiVO Domino’s integration

TiVO and Domino’s Pizza have teamed up to deliver the ultimate in online/offline integration – TiVO users can now order pizza from the couch, using their remote controls.

The new feature is free to all TiVO users and is live already. All users need to do is create an account at Dominos.com and then log into it via TiVO to place their orders.

Convergence centering on the TV has been a major trend in recent years, and figures to continue to be as our home entertainment (and eating!) options move to the Internet and become more connected. With set top boxes like the TiVO, not only can users rent movies and stream them to the TV, they can stream music, photos, and, in some cases, web content.

Set top boxes seem likely to continue to get increased capabilities over the next few years – and, it seems to me, that the companies that will win the space will offer the best experiences and the most compelling array of features. Media features will be key, of course, but interesting extensions like ordering pizza could also help crown the winners.

Blockbuster May Release Set Top Box

Following in the successful footsteps of Netflix, with the Roku player, and TiVO, rumor has it that Blockbuster may unveil a set top box before Christmas. This is the second time the rumor has come up in the last few months – hard to know whether that makes it more likely to be true or not.

The box would allow customers to download online rentals from Movielink over the Internet and then watch them on their TVs in the same way that Roku player works with Netflix’s Watch Instantly service.

As I always say about these kinds of products, features may be the make of break point of differentiation here and these set top boxes are perfect platforms for software that delivers not just movies over the Internet, but also photos, news, scores, cartoons, and other content. A first mover advantage is there for the taking.

TiVo Planning “Whole-Home Model”

TiVo logo In the not-too-distant future, TiVo boxes may do a lot more than just record TV and let you skip the commercials. According to Tom Rogers, president and CEO of TiVo, the company is working on a “whole-home model” that would make the TiVo a hub connected to all TVs.

Rogers made the comment, a seemingly off-hand notion, at the end of a transcription of a live interview, at the D: All Things Digital conference in late May.

TiVo’s desire to take on more capabilities hasn’t been a secret — it’s added streaming music from Rhapsody, Amazon Unbox movie downloads, podcasts, and YouTube support — but this is the first I’ve heard of TiVo explicitly saying it wants to be at the center of the home’s entertainment network.

If that does come to pass, we can expect some wireless networking between TiVo and devices, I think. I suspect TiVo will also need a way to stream photos and other web content to TVs and other displays around the house. FrameChannel might fit that bill.
