Vudu Adds Free Web Content, Photo Services

Vudu set top box

The set top box company Vudu has added over 120 channels of free Internet content to its content line up, including YouTube, on-demand network TV shows, and photo-sharing services like Flickr and Picasa.

These channels were added as the first flush of development on Vudu’s RIA – Rich Internet Application – platform, which allows developers to create their own applications that run on the Vudu box.

The application platform idea is similar to what Neuros offers with its LINK box, thought Vudu has higher-profile content partners on board at launch.

Support for Flickr and Picasa – two of the leading photo-sharing services – caught my eye. If those services are already there, and the RIA platform allows for new applications, the Vudu seems like a natural fit for applications that deliver photos, news, and other content over the web such as FrameChannel.
